What is UPI AutoPay? A Plain-English Guide (India, 2026)
UPI AutoPay is India's e-Mandate system for recurring UPI payments. Here's how it works, what it's used for, and why to watch it closely.
UPI AutoPay is an NPCI-backed system that lets merchants automatically debit your bank account through UPI on a recurring schedule — like a standing instruction, but running on the UPI rail instead of ECS or NACH.
You approve a mandate once (with your UPI PIN), specifying the maximum amount and frequency. From then on, the merchant can trigger debits up to that cap without asking again — until you revoke it.
Common uses: OTT subscriptions (Netflix, Prime, JioHotstar), mutual fund SIPs, EMI payments, utility bills, insurance premiums, gym memberships, and increasingly Google Play and App Store billing.
The safety design: mandates have a cap, an expiry date, and can be paused or revoked at any time from your UPI app. Any charge above the cap triggers a fresh authorisation prompt.
The risk: because approval is one-time, UPI AutoPay is the single biggest source of forgotten subscription charges in India today. If you don't audit your mandates, they keep debiting.
Frequently asked questions
Is UPI AutoPay safe?
Yes — mandates have a cap, an expiry, and can be revoked from your UPI app. But it's the source of most forgotten recurring charges in India, so audit your active mandates every 90 days.
What is the difference between UPI AutoPay and standing instructions?
Standing instructions run on the ECS/NACH bank rail and require a paper or bank-form setup. UPI AutoPay runs on the UPI rail, is set up in seconds inside your UPI app, and can be revoked instantly. UPI AutoPay is the modern replacement for most consumer use cases.
